Beginning to drama
01
When I was eleven, I saw my first play. I was amazed by the set, sound, lights, and especially the acting. I did not have the confidence to start, but I knew then that it was going to be apart of my future in some way. It took a great teacher to help me to come out of my shell and get better at acting. Once I did my confidence rose, and I discovered I was good at it, and became a leader in my organizations.
When I got to high school, I was very shy and introverted. I took my first drama class because a teacher from the grade before suggested I try. I was so scared but got a chance to be in a class where my teacher taught me a lot. She helped me to see the cultures that existed outside of my own and helped me to learn many things about how to have self confidence and how to speak better. My teacher directed my first play I was in. The play was called “Boys Next Door”. It was the first play I was ever in and one of my favorite plays to do this day. I learned that when you are in a cast you have to learn to be on a team and you have to learn that you have a part to play. Every role is important and every role must be worked on.

When I was growing up reading was my favorite thing to do. What started me into drama was starting with my reading. I wanted to communicate with people and started to learn how people communicated through starting to read scripts. I loved reading the dialogue from the characters and how they spoke. Drama helped me to increase what I read and gave me a new way to communicate.
I like reading because it helps me to be more creative and gives me a chance to visit places I could not visit in real life.
Why drama?
01
I chose not to do acting professionally because I had a love for reading and wanted to help students find their way in drama by helping them to improve their writing skills, reading skills, acting skills, design skills, and creativity for what they will need in college and beyond. I also learned early on when I started acting that just because you read a lot of books and plays, it doesn’t make you a good actor. You have to train to become better in all aspects of drama and beyond.
02
The more I participated in theatre the more I fell in love with parts of it that I did not realize were there. I fell in love with lighting, and sound, and costumes, and constructing sets, and designing things for shows. Every time I learned something new there was another avenue, I could take to do something creative and different. Loving drama led me to get a Masters in theatre.
03
Drama can change how you see the world. I learned how to quickly problem solve and think on your feet. One moment I had to was when I was working at a sports camp. A child broke his arm, and I was able to stay calm and create a sling to hold his arm stable until his parents could get there to take him to the hospital. I f I had not learned to stay calm under pressure I would not have been able to help. You learn that there is always another solution to most problems. When I was directing students in plays, you learn that you always must have understudies for shows. One night at the play one of my students got sick and could not perform. If I had not taken the time to map out another solution the show would have failed. The students understudy did an excellent job and knew what to do because I knew I needed another solution to a problem that can happen.

The most important thing I have learned from going to school for drama is becoming a thinker. I could stop and take the time to think through choices and was able to pick the best ones for me. For instance, when collaborating with a director to help produce a show, my ability to think through choices, helped me to give him options that were good choices on the design of our stage. I also was able to help present to the actors, better strategies on how to perform with better emotion and to make their character more believable. I learned to be able to think on my toes, in every situation, and to trust my own gut and work ethic to make the best choices. I also learned teamwork and how important it is in any career you go into. Teamwork was important in my job as a drama teacher. We had to put on a school wide musical, and I had to work with the dance teacher, the orchestra teacher, the choir teacher, the art teacher, and the band teacher to help put the show together. It was a success and I learned how important teamwork and being a manger can be. You learn to count on people for certain roles and that you must count on others.
I hope to teach students how to survive in the world with skills they learn. Reading comprehension (understanding what you are reading and being able to teach it to someone), problem solving (being able to think through solutions that will help on your job, like creating a schedule for your employees, or figuring out how to give your presentation to your team and boss), critical thinking (Thinking through complex problems and having patience to do so). Like creativity, empathy for others, self-confidence, and the ability to communicate effectively and clearly. These are skills that each student should know to succeed.

The drama energy
01
I believe in teaching drama to help students to think creatively, to be more confident, to learn more about their culture, and to use their imaginations. Enreach has given me the opportunity to create a drama program that will help students to flourish in multiple subjects. That is one of the best things students can do to grow.
I look forward to seeing and hearing from you and your students. I am excited to help them develop their best selves and teams. I am also excited to help them compete and be apart of something that can help them achieve so much more in life.
