In this digital age, why are drama and dramatic interpretation more important than ever? We invited Paul, a drama teacher from Edinburgh, to share how dramatic education helps children explore emotions, express themselves, and develop extraordinary skills.

"Dramatic interpretation, to me, is a way of expressing yourself through the story that you're telling. It's also about showing this great big emotion to share with the audience. And if you're doing it correctly, the response from the audience is unlike anything you have ever felt in any other type of performance."

"If I were to use one word to describe this, I would choose the word "rewarding," because nothing rewards an actor better than seeing the audience believe their story, believe their character, and empathizing with them, because this is what dramatic interpretation is all about. It's all about creating this link between the audience and the actor and making the story look alive, feel alive. And again, the response from the audience when you are taking your bows after delivering a very strong, passionate performance, it's really, really rewarding."

"The most unique charm of dramatic interpretation, I think, is the combination of speech and performance, right? So through your story, you are also required to send a message that you would usually use a speech or more formal language to talk about, right? But that's something that really, really makes dramatic interpretation stand out from public speaking and other ways of performance. It's that you are talking about an important message through the story that you're passionate about, and you are basically delivering a speech through the drama without using your own words, but in a more elegant way to talk about this problem."

“正如我所说，戏剧和表演性演讲能够激发强烈的情感。在这个数字时代，当人工智能占据着数字世界和社交媒体的各个角落时，我感觉到我们正在遗忘——感受这些情感恰恰是我们生而为人的根本。因此我认为，这正是参与表演性演讲和戏剧表演的重要意义所在：为了不忘记身而为人的意义，不忘记感受那些复杂而澎湃的情感意味着什么。为了让我们不忘却，也为了能与倾听的观众分享你的情感，实现同频共振，更是为了唤醒他人的同理心——学会体察他人感受，懂得如何设身处地，真正理解他人的心境与际遇。”

“Like I said, dramatic interpretation brings out these strong emotions, and in this digital age, with AI taking a place in the digital world and all over social media, I feel like we are forgetting that feeling those emotions is actually what makes us human. So I think this is why it is important to engage in dramatic interpretation and doing drama performances as well, right? To not forget what it means to be human, what it means to feel those complicated and big emotions, right? So in order for us not to forget, and just to share your own emotions with other people, with the audience that is listening, that is resonating with you, and also to remind others what is empathy, right? How to empathize with other people's feelings, how to put themselves in their shoes, and how to live and understand how other people feel.”
